- Ads in AI Overviews have run since October 2024, and Google is scaling ads in AI Mode now.
- Existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns qualify automatically, with no opt-out and no separate report.
- Google says ads don't influence organic AI answers, yet both compete for the same screen and clicks.
- Start your answer engine optimization (AEO) plan with a prompt baseline, then report paid and organic together.
The best AEO platform for enterprise companies should show where ads sit next to your Google AI Overviews citations. AirOps tracks both and supports paid AI ads.
Ads in AI Overviews are live, and Google is scaling sponsored placements inside AI Mode answers. Ad intelligence platforms like AirOps already log observed ads in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode answers. Your brand's organic answers now share that space with paid ones.
Paid AI search has two halves: ChatGPT ads and Google's ads inside AI answers. This guide covers the Google half, from the organic side of the screen. Paid search guides already explain how to get ads in, and this one explains how to respond.
You get what runs where, what Google lets you measure, and a 90-day plan. The plan is for SEO and AEO leads who work with pay-per-click (PPC) owners on the same queries.
What are AI Overviews ads, and where do they appear?
AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries at the top of some Google results pages. AI Overviews ads are paid placements that run above, below, or inside those summaries. Google sells them through standard campaigns, with no separate product to buy.
Google's help page on AI-powered ads lists two formats inside AI Overviews and AI Mode: text ads and Shopping ads. That list is current as of October 29, 2026. Google is also testing local inventory ads and vehicle ads.
| Placement | Ad formats | Markets |
|---|---|---|
| Above or below an AI Overview | Text, Shopping, local, and app ads | All 200+ countries and territories with AI Overviews |
| Inside an AI Overview | Text and Shopping ads | 12 English-language markets, including the US and Indonesia |
| Inside an AI Mode answer | Text and Shopping ads | The US plus 10 English-language markets |
Pakistan shows text ads only, and Indonesia shows ads inside AI Overviews only. One ad can show above an AI Overview and inside it on the same search. Google won't show it both inside and directly below.
These ads went live for US mobile searches in October 2024. Google brought them to US desktop in May 2025. More English-language markets followed by December 2025, per updates to Google's help documentation.
Which Google ad formats appear inside AI Mode answers?
Text ads and Shopping ads are the two formats Google lists inside AI Mode answers. Google's October 28 AI Mode post says sponsored ads in AI Mode carry a “Sponsored” label.
Google also says click-through rates (CTRs) are “already similar” between sponsored and organic product list items in AI Mode. That claim rests on Google internal data for US product listings, August 20 through September 3, 2026. Google shares no figure and no text ad data.
How do Google AI Mode ads work?
Google AI Mode ads match to your query and to the content of the AI response itself. The ad then runs inside the answer with a Sponsored label.
In the same October 28 post, Google says it is scaling ads in AI Mode across 10 countries. Brazil, Mexico, and the UK are planned for Q4 2026 and are not live yet. Google is also launching multiturn ads in the US, which place ads in follow-up questions.
AI Mode uses query fan-out, which splits one question into subtopics and runs a separate search for each. Google adds that AI Mode queries run three times longer than traditional searches (US, May 2026). Longer questions give Google more context to match an ad against.
Your match type decides which of those questions your ads can reach:
- Broad match, AI Max, Shopping, and Performance Max qualify for contextual and direct query matching.
- Exact and phrase match qualify only when the query shows direct commercial intent.
- Negative keywords and brand exclusions still apply inside AI Overviews and AI Mode.
AI Max for Search adds targeting and creative controls to existing Search campaigns. Google's help documentation confirms it is a setting, with no new campaign type to build.
Google's AI Max launch post says advertisers typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar cost. That figure comes from Google internal data from 2025, for non-retail advertisers. No outside study has verified it.
Google's help page lists what AI Max for Search changes inside a campaign. It adds search term matching, text customization, and final URL expansion. It also adds brand controls and URL inclusions or exclusions, which are your main guardrails.
Google also writes AI explainers, short Gemini-generated context shown next to some ads. You can't write, edit, or opt out of them. Google says clear website content helps keep them accurate, which puts your organic pages directly behind your paid ad copy.
Each market expansion and new format tests the same open question about Google's business model. “Can they still monetize an AI result the same way that they can a traditional search result?” asked Chris Long, co-founder of Nectiv. Google's phased rollout is its working answer, and Chris covers AI Mode in depth in the session below.
How do ads in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode affect organic traffic and AEO?
Sponsored placements in AI Overviews and AI Mode compete with your organic answers for the same screen and the same clicks.
Two organic metrics matter here. A citation is a link to your page inside an AI answer. A mention is your brand named in the answer, with or without a link.
Google's help page says buying ads doesn't influence organic AI answers. It also says your organic citations don't affect ad auction eligibility. Both are Google's policy statements, with no outside audit behind them.
The organic question becomes attention on a shared screen. Your citation and a competitor's Sponsored placement can sit in the same answer, and the reader picks one.
Independent studies link AI summaries with fewer clicks, though none of them proves cause. The Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults across 68,879 Google searches in March 2025.
Visits with an AI summary ended in a traditional result click 8% of the time. Visits without one clicked a result 15% of the time. Only 1% of visits with a summary clicked a link inside the summary itself.
Sessions also ended more often after a summary: 26% of the time, versus 16% without one. Pew's data is observational, so it shows an association between summaries and fewer clicks. Its “AI summary” label covers any AI-written summary Google showed in March 2025.
Pew measured AI summaries before ads ran in AI Mode, so its data covers organic behavior only. Newer agency data adds the paid side of the page, and it shows organic CTR partly recovering in early 2026. Agency data comes from client accounts rather than a random consumer panel, so read it as directional.
Seer Interactive's 2026 update covers 53 client brands from January 2025 through February 2026. In February 2026, organic CTR was 2.36% on queries with an AI Overview and 3.82% without. Seer assigns AI Overview status from one results snapshot per query.
Paid CTR followed the same pattern: 16.21% with an AI Overview and 21.85% without. Those paid figures cover every ad on the page, including ads outside the summary. Seer reports paid CTR as steadier than organic over the same period.
Seer also found that cited brands kept more clicks on informational queries. Cited brands earned about 20,743 clicks per million impressions, versus about 9,445 for uncited brands. Seer says it cannot claim causation, since higher-authority brands are likelier to be cited.
Paid results face the same squeeze as organic ones on these pages. “Fewer people are clicking on paid results when Google shows an AI overview,” said Kevin Indig, author of Growth Memo. With ads inside the answer, paid and organic now compete for whatever clicks remain.
What should an AEO team do in the first 90 days?
Your first 90 days should produce one shared baseline and one joint report. This plan is AirOps' recommendation. No study cited here tests whether paid and organic coordination improves results.
Days 1 to 30, map where AI Overviews ads show
- Pull your top converting paid keywords and priority organic topics into one prompt list.
- Run each prompt in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and log every citation, mention, and Sponsored placement.
- Record baseline citation rate, share of voice, and paid share of voice per prompt cluster.
Ad intelligence tools build paid share of voice from observed ads in AI answers. Pair that paid log with your organic citation tracking so both sides use one prompt set.
Days 61 to 90, report paid and organic together
- Build one monthly report with citation rate, share of voice, paid share of voice, and branded search.
- Test AI Max on one campaign with brand controls and URL exclusions in place.
- Recheck Google's help page each month, since markets and formats change every quarter.
| Phase | AEO lead owns | PPC lead owns |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1 to 30 | Prompt list and organic baseline | Top converting keywords and search terms |
| Days 31 to 60 | Product truth on cited pages | Landing page fixes and negative keywords |
| Days 61 to 90 | Citation and share of voice reporting | One AI Max test with brand controls |
How should SEO and PPC teams coordinate when ads appear in AI answers?
Coordinate around one shared prompt map and one monthly report. Google AI Mode ads and your organic answers now compete on the same prompts. Each side needs the other's data.
Leadership will ask for click-based proof first. Our AI search measurement recap makes the case for directional metrics over waiting for perfect attribution. Agree on those metrics before the first joint report goes out. Changing definitions mid-quarter breaks your trend lines and your credibility with finance.
Split ownership by lever, and keep the evidence shared. Each lead controls different inputs to the same AI answer:
- Your SEO or AEO lead owns citations, mentions, and the pages AI answers draw on.
- Your PPC lead owns bids, match types, negative keywords, and every AI Max setting.
- Your PPC lead shares search terms data each month so organic prompts track real queries.
- Your AEO lead shares citation gaps each month so paid sees where competitors hold answers.
- Both leads review the shared prompt map monthly and agree on the next priority prompts.
Budget reviews push leaders to fund one channel over the other each quarter. “You have to do both,” said Sydney Sloan, CMO Advisor at G2, on balancing PPC and SEO. Shared prompt data lets both budgets rest on the same evidence.
