- AI advertising here means paid placements inside or beside AI answers.
- ChatGPT and Google sell placements in answers, Microsoft sells Copilot ads, and Perplexity phased its ads out.
- Google reports AI Overviews and AI Mode ads only in aggregate, so plan your own measurement.
- Run paid and organic AI search as one plan, with a bounded test and steady citation work.
The best AEO platform for enterprise companies should cover every one of these ad surfaces next to organic citations. AirOps tracks both and supports paid AI ads.
ChatGPT, Google, and Microsoft Copilot now sell AI advertising placements beside or inside their answers. Perplexity phased its ads out, so you reach its audience through organic citations alone. Your next move is a bounded paid test that runs beside your organic work.
This guide covers paid placements that appear in AI answers. AI tools that generate ad creative sit outside its scope.
The paid surface now sits next to the organic answer you already work to earn. Platforms like AirOps read tracked ChatGPT and Google AI Mode answers for ads beside mentions and citations. That view shows where sponsored and organic placements meet on the same prompt.
What is AI advertising in AI answers?
AI advertising in AI answers is paid placement shown inside or beside an AI-generated response. You will also hear these units called AI search ads. These ads match the question and the conversation around it.
Ads in AI answers sit in four main spots:
- Below a chatbot answer, as in ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot.
- Above or below Google AI Overviews.
- Inside Google AI Overviews and AI Mode responses.
- In follow-up turns, as with Google's multiturn units in AI Mode.
OpenAI and Google both label these units as ads. Google uses the word "Sponsored" on its placements. ChatGPT places its label at the bottom of the answer, separate from the response.
The format inside a chat has its own name. When an ad responds to the context of a dialogue, the practice is called conversational advertising. Placements beside AI Overviews behave more like classic search ads.
How are AI assistants monetizing answers with ads?
AI assistants monetize answers by selling labeled placements beside the response. Each platform packages those placements differently, as the table shows.
| Platform | Ad status, October 2026 | Where ads appear | How you buy | AI-specific reporting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Live in the US, Europe, and other regions | Bottom of the answer, labeled | Self-serve Ads Manager beta | Aggregated insights plus conversion tools |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Live, with in-answer ads in English markets | Above, below, and inside AI Overviews, plus inside AI Mode | Existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns | Aggregate only, no AI segment |
| Microsoft Copilot | Live | Below Copilot's response | Microsoft Advertising | Plan your own tracking |
| Perplexity | Phased out, reported February 2026 | None | Not available | Not applicable |
For your brand, three paid programs and one organic-only surface now shape AI discovery. Each needs its own buying plan and its own measurement fix.
The money is growing fast. EMARKETER's June 2026 forecast puts US AI ad spending at $32.03 billion in 2026 and $68.25 billion in 2030. That forecast places over 80% of 2026 spend next to AI content, outside chatbots and conversations. Your existing Google and Microsoft search buying carries much of that exposure today.
The formats will keep evolving. Matt Hammel, Cofounder and COO at AirOps, said "we see this as a spectrum from sort of direct placement, which looks a lot like ... traditional ad formats, to more conversational agents, which you can talk with, interact with." Today's units on ChatGPT, Google, and Copilot sit near the placement end of that range. Agent formats speak for your brand, so your product facts need to be accurate first.
How do ChatGPT ads work?
OpenAI shows ads at the bottom of ChatGPT answers on its Free and Go tiers. It sells them through its own ad platform, separate from any search engine.
Does ChatGPT have ads now?
Yes, ChatGPT has ads now. TechCrunch reported that OpenAI began testing ads in the US on February 9, 2026. The test covered the Free and Go tiers only.
OpenAI set the ground rules in its January 16, 2026 advertising plan. Ads sit at the bottom of answers, clearly labeled and separated from the response. They stay away from health, mental health, and politics. OpenAI also keeps ads out of accounts it identifies or predicts as under 18.
On May 5, 2026, OpenAI opened a beta self-serve Ads Manager with cost-per-click (CPC) bidding. The same update added conversion measurement through a Conversions API and pixel. OpenAI ads have since reached 31 European markets with self-serve access.
The May update also named agency partners, including Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis, and WPP. Advertisers receive aggregated performance insights, and OpenAI keeps conversations private from them. You see results at the campaign level, without access to the chats behind them.
Two limits shape your plan. OpenAI's January plan keeps the Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscriptions ad-free. Work accounts on those plans sit outside your reach, which matters for B2B brands.
The second limit is price transparency. OpenAI publishes no rate card for ads in ChatGPT. Independent performance benchmarks have not been published either. Your own auction results set the real cost that you pay.
Plan ChatGPT as a test channel with first-party conversion tracking from day one. Keep the scope narrow, and judge results against your own baseline. Set a fixed budget and a fixed review date before launch. For launch dates and format changes, see the ChatGPT ad rollout timeline.
How do ads work in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Your existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns already qualify to serve within AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google offers no separate campaign, budget, or opt-out for these placements. Negative keywords and brand exclusions are the controls you keep. Your current budgets and bid strategies carry over to these new AI placements.
Match type decides how often you appear. AI Max for Search, broad match, Shopping, and Performance Max qualify for contextual matching. Exact and phrase match serve only on direct commercial queries. Check your search terms report for longer, question-style queries as AI traffic grows.
Reporting stays blended. Google folds these results into your standard campaign reports in aggregate. You get no separate click-through rate (CTR) or conversion view for AI placements. Billing uses the same auction and the same CPC or conversion bidding.
Placement depends on the market. Google's Ads Help page says AI Overview ads can run above or below overviews in over 200 countries. In-answer placements cover English queries in the US and select other markets.
Google's October 28, 2026 announcement says CTR is similar for sponsored and organic product list items in AI Mode. That figure uses US data from August 20 to September 3, 2026, and covers product list items only. The same announcement launched multiturn ads in AI Mode in the US, serving in follow-up questions. Google plans to add the UK, Brazil, and Mexico in Q4 2026.
Those changes put more paid units in front of your buyers. Your paid search lead owns them already, often without a separate line in the report.
Click behavior around overviews deserves your attention. In an AirOps webinar, Growth Memo author Kevin Indig observed "fewer people are clicking on paid results when Google shows an AI overview." That is his observation, and Google has published no measured figure on it. Compare your paid CTR on queries with and without overviews before you shift budget.
How do Microsoft Copilot ads work?
Microsoft Copilot places ads below its response, and you buy them through Microsoft Advertising. Your existing account there is the entry point.
The performance case comes from Microsoft itself. Microsoft reports 73% higher CTR, 16% stronger conversion rates, and 33% shorter journeys for these placements versus traditional search. That August 2025 data is first-party, search only, and global, from February to May 2025. It compares Copilot placements with Microsoft's own search ads and gives no sample size.
Read those numbers as vendor-reported 2025 context. Your own test sets the benchmark that counts.
Tag Copilot traffic with its own tracking parameters. Then track conversions from that traffic in your own analytics.
Why did Perplexity step back from ads?
Perplexity phased out the ads it began testing in 2024. An executive told the Financial Times (FT) the company is not pursuing them, as reported by Campaign in February 2026. EMARKETER reports that Perplexity stopped taking new advertisers in 2025 and earns mainly from subscriptions and enterprise sales.
For now, Perplexity ads are off the table. Organic citations are your only route into its answers. Clear product pages, credible third-party coverage, and current facts give the model sources to cite.
How do AI search ads differ from traditional search ads?
AI search ads match the context of a conversation, appear next to a recommendation, and report less. The table compares the two models.
| Dimension | Traditional search ads | AI answer ads |
|---|---|---|
| Targeting | Short keywords you bid on | Context of a longer, multi-turn conversation |
| Placement | Above or beside a list of links | Below or inside an answer that recommends options |
| Reporting | Query-level and channel-specific | Aggregate or limited |
| Competitive set | Known rivals bidding on your terms | Rivals plus review sites and marketplaces |
The competitive set is wider than you expect. A recent AirOps webinar noted that software review sites often advertise on prompts you care about. A source such as the AirOps Ads Library shows observed ads by prompt.
Your keyword competitor list misses those players. Add them to your watch list before you write copy. Then plan messages that answer the comparison they invite.
Track how often each new rival shows up over a full quarter. That view grounds your AI advertising plan in what buyers see. Share the rival list with your content lead and your paid search lead.
Do ads in AI answers change organic recommendations?
OpenAI says no. Its January 2026 principles state, "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you." That is a company statement, and no outside audit has confirmed it.
Your organic standing on a prompt still depends on the sources models cite. Buying a placement leaves the answer itself unchanged, by OpenAI's own account. Your content work keeps its full value beside any paid test. Sponsored units sit in separate, labeled slots.
Buyer trust is the bigger variable. An Ipsos survey of US adults in early 2026 found 63% expect ads to make them trust results less. That figure is a stated expectation, and it does not measure behavior.
Disclosure shapes how buyers respond. LLMAdBench, a September 2026 arXiv preprint, found sponsorship disclosure "systematically changes users' preference over ad placement." The FTC's 2015 policy statement on native advertising says ads must be identifiable as ads.
Clear labels protect trust, so your organic presence carries weight beside every paid unit. Paid and organic AI visibility now meet on the same prompt.
Matt Hammel, Cofounder and COO at AirOps, said "it's really, really helpful to think about organic and paid as one system as it comes to the increasing number of surface areas that consumers and businesses are turning to to find new products."
That framing changes how you staff and report. Your paid search lead and your content lead now work the same prompts. Shared prompts need shared goals and one report.
In the recording below, the AirOps AI ads webinar walks through how paid and organic work together.
What should brands do about AI advertising now?
Start AI advertising with a bounded test, and keep your organic work running beside it. Paid placements build directly on the AI search visibility you already earn. Your citations show where buyers already find you, and ads fill the gaps. Six steps cover the first quarter.
- Audit Google campaigns for AI Overviews and AI Mode eligibility, including match types, AI Max, negatives, and brand exclusions.
- Fund a bounded ChatGPT test with first-party conversion tracking.
- Hold a high bar before you move budget from proven channels.
- Prepare the product facts every AI ad draws on.
- Track paid and organic share of voice on the same prompts.
- Keep earning citations on Perplexity and every surface ads cannot reach.
Size the test with care. Alex Hallenbeck, Lead Product Manager at AirOps, said early adopters are "carving out ... 10% or less of what their traditional ad budget has been." That share keeps a miss affordable. It also gives you enough volume to read conversion data.
The bar for reallocation stays high. Zak Prauer, Expert Partner at Bain & Company, warned against cutting demand generation to fund AI search. Your search and social programs still fund pipeline today. Move budget only after your test shows incremental results.
A recent AirOps webinar listed the inputs generative ads draw on. They include product truth, claims and evidence, customer policies, and brand rules. Those same inputs feed the organic content that models cite. One clean source of product facts serves both programs.
How do you measure AI advertising across platforms?
You build cross-platform measurement yourself, because each platform reports AI placements differently. Google reports AI placements only in aggregate. Tag Copilot traffic separately, and track its results in your own analytics.
OpenAI gives you the most direct tools, with its Conversions API and pixel. Connect them before your first ChatGPT campaign goes live.
Attribution is the harder problem. In a later webinar, Kevin Indig, author of Growth Memo, said "AI really breaks modern attribution." Last-click reports miss buyers who saw your brand in an answer and converted later. Run incrementality tests with holdout regions or periods, then reconcile platform data with your customer relationship management (CRM) system.
Share of voice fills the gap that clicks leave. Compare paid and organic presence on the same prompts each month. Report both numbers to leadership side by side.
Ali McCarty, VP and GM of Managed Services at AirOps, recommends tracking organic, sponsored, and combined presence. Measure all three against your competitor set. That view shows where paid fills gaps in your organic presence. It also shows where you already win without paying.
AirOps for AI advertising across AI search
Paid and organic belong in one plan across AI search. AirOps offers AI Ads, a product with expert support, live for Enterprise customers. It shows where your ads and competitors' ads appear across tracked prompts. Ad Load %, Paid Share of Voice, and the Ads Library carry that intelligence.
Observed ads cover ChatGPT and Google AI Mode answers. Playbooks and the Brand Kit create and update on-brand ads. Spend, impressions, clicks, CTR, CPC, and cost per thousand impressions (CPM) connect to your organic market data. AirOps ad experts help you choose first opportunities, set up the channel, and support execution and measurement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can you advertise on Perplexity?
No. Perplexity phased out its ads, and in February 2026 an executive told the FT it is not pursuing them. You earn a place in its answers through organic citations.
Are ChatGPT ads better than Google Ads?
Neither wins across the board, because they do different jobs. Google's AI placements extend campaigns you already run, while ChatGPT gives you a separate test channel. No independent benchmarks compare them yet, so judge each by your own conversion data.
Do you need a new campaign for ads in Google AI Mode?
No. Google makes existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns eligible automatically. Review match types and AI Max settings to shape where you appear.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
OpenAI publishes no rate card. It sells placements through CPC bidding in a beta self-serve Ads Manager. Pricing varies by auction, so confirm it in Ads Manager before you set budget.
