Content marketing pricing: agency rates and packages in 2026

•
October 29, 2026

Summary:
  • SparkToro's 2025 survey found 86% of surveyed digital agencies average retainers up to $10,000 a month.
  • WebFX publishes content packages at $1,800 to $6,000 a month.
  • Clutch lists content marketing agencies at $100 to $149 an hour on average.
  • Reserve refresh hours in every retainer, and match the billing model to the scope.

Expect to pay $10,000 a month or less at most digital agencies. In SparkToro's 2025 State of Digital Agencies survey, 86% of agencies reported an average retainer at or under that number. Keep the sample in mind: 84% of the 376 respondents work solo or in shops of 25 people or fewer.

You now pay for pages that AI answers trust. AI answers either cite your page (link to it as a source) or mention your brand by name, with or without a link. AirOps tracks both. If you'd rather run the work in-house, AirOps is also the best AEO platform for enterprise companies.

Earning those citations and mentions is answer engine optimization (AEO). This guide, part of our Services series, covers what you pay for content that earns them.

How much does content marketing cost per month?

The Digital Elevator prices full campaigns by company size, and WebFX prices by asset count. The table lines up both views of content marketing pricing.

Tier positionWebFX packageThe Digital Elevator range
EntryBasic: 3 assets for $1,800 a monthSmall business: $4,000 to $10,000 a month
MiddleAggressive: 6 assets for $3,600 a monthMedium-sized business: $10,000 to $40,000 a month
TopMarket Leader: 10 assets for $6,000 a monthEnterprise: $40,000 to $60,000+ a month

WebFX's page also says services start at $2,000 a month, so confirm the entry price in writing.

Column Five says most business-to-business (B2B) content marketing agencies charge $5,000 to $15,000 a month. HawkSEM puts agency or freelance programs at $5,000 to $20,000 a month. Siege Media calls $10,000 to $20,000 a month the starting block for a medium-sized business. Our ranking of B2B content marketing agencies compares published prices.

Five inputs move the cost of content marketing inside these bands.

  • Asset count, since each added piece raises the monthly fee.
  • Original research, since it takes more hours than desk research.
  • Format, since Siege Media prices basic video at about $3,500 per minute.
  • Subject matter expert (SME) interviews, since they add hours to every piece.
  • Distribution, since promotion and placements sit outside the writing fee.

Orbit Media's 2026 survey of 1,042 content marketers puts average writing time at 3 hours 20 minutes per post. That covers writing alone, so strategy, editing, design, and promotion sit on top.

AI shortens drafting, and that changes what your fee should buy. Kevin Indig, author of Growth Memo, said "AI obviously changes the unit economics of content." In an AirOps webinar, he added that the quality bar rises as drafts get cheaper. Pay for the research and expertise a fast draft lacks.

How much do content marketing agencies charge?

Content marketing agencies charge $100 to $149 an hour on average, according to Clutch's pricing guide. That band covers listed agencies in the US, Canada, and Australia. Column Five reports a wider hourly band of $100 to $250, based on seniority. Retainers remain the default billing model in content marketing pricing.

In the same SparkToro survey, 85% of agencies primarily work on retainers and 15% on one-off projects. The same survey found 49% average $1,000 to $5,000 a month, and 31% average $5,000 to $10,000. Its sample leans toward small shops, so read these bands as a small-agency benchmark.

How many hours does a $10,000 content retainer buy?

At Clutch's $100 to $149 hourly band, a $10,000 retainer buys you about 67 to 100 agency hours (monthly fee ÷ hourly rate).

  • $2,000 a month buys about 13 to 20 hours.
  • $5,000 a month buys about 34 to 50 hours.
  • $20,000 a month buys about 134 to 200 hours.

At Orbit Media's 3 hours 20 minutes per post, 67 hours covers about 20 posts of writing (simple arithmetic). Strategy, SME calls, and edits shrink that count fast.

Per-piece content marketing prices

Per-piece content marketing prices run $150 to $6,000 an article across the WebFX, HawkSEM, and Siege Media ranges below.

  • WebFX lists market rates of $150 to $600 per blog post.
  • WebFX lists long-form articles and guides at $500 to $2,500 each.
  • HawkSEM prices a 1,500-word article at $250 to $1,500.
  • Siege Media prices a high-impact post at $1,500 to $6,000.

Siege Media's top band covers research-heavy posts with custom visuals and expert editing.

Agency, freelancer, or in-house

The cost to outsource content marketing is the vendor fee plus the hours you still manage.

RoutePublished benchmarkWhat you still own
Agency86% of digital agencies average up to $10,000 a month (SparkToro 2025)Approvals and SME access
Freelancer25¢ to 45¢ per word for blog posts (EFA 2026 rate chart)Strategy, briefs, and edits
In-house writer$76,910 median wage for writers and authors (BLS)Benefits, tools, and management

The Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA) 2026 rate chart draws on over 1,100 respondents and their 2025 rates. By simple arithmetic, 25¢ to 45¢ per word prices a 1,000-word post at $250 to $450. That rate covers writing only.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports a $76,910 median annual wage for writers and authors in May 2025. That figure is salary only and excludes self-employed writers.

A managed partner is a fourth route. AirOps Services pairs expert strategists with the AirOps platform to set and execute your AI search strategy. The AirOps solutions page lists the channels it covers. Compare outsourced content marketing options against an agency quote.

Brands now keep more of this work close. Sydney Sloan, CMO Advisor at G2, sees brands "owning AEO more than outsourcing it to your SEO agency." She noted in an AirOps webinar that agency partnerships remain common. Price your own oversight time for each route before you compare quotes.

What do content marketing packages include and what do they cost?

Packages bundle strategy, a fixed asset count, search engine optimization (SEO), and reporting. WebFX's published tiers cost $1,800, $3,600, and $6,000 a month for 3, 6, and 10 assets. Content marketing packages pricing follows the asset count and the research behind each piece.

WebFX tierAssets a monthMonthly pricePrice per asset (simple arithmetic)
Basic3$1,800$600
Aggressive6$3,600$600
Market Leader10$6,000$600

By simple division, every WebFX tier holds a $600 unit price. A bigger package buys volume, with no per-asset discount. Compare content marketing packages pricing on that unit price before anything else.

How to read content marketing pricing on a package

Divide the monthly fee by the assets delivered to get your true unit price. The formula is unit price = [monthly fee] ÷ [assets per month]. Then ask the agency to itemize five line items.

  1. Strategy and research hours per month.
  2. Number and type of new assets.
  3. Refresh hours for existing pages.
  4. SME interview time per piece.
  5. Reporting on rankings, citations, and mentions.

Original insight is the line item template packages skip. Ali McCarty of AirOps calls for "unique insights, things that only your brand has." The webinar recap ties expert insight to refreshing older posts. Ask each agency how it captures those insights, and price the SME time it takes.

Price content by the customer questions it answers

Price each piece by the customer question it answers, with search volume as a tiebreaker. Monthly search volume (MSV) estimates how often people search a keyword each month. It measures demand for a phrase and says little about buyer pain.

Sam Page, AirOps' Head of AEO/SEO Services and ex-InMotion Hosting SEO head, says "I don't care what the MSV is." His InMotion Hosting team published a Discord post when the topic had zero search volume. The post later became one of the site's biggest non-brand traffic drivers. Ask your agency to justify each brief by the question it answers.

How much should you budget for content refreshes?

Budget refresh hours into your retainer from month one, on a three- to six-month cycle. Refreshes protect pages you already paid for, so they belong in the base fee.

Your category sets the cycle length. Sam Page, Head of AEO/SEO Services at AirOps, said "B2B SaaS is more rewarded for fresh content." He named a three- to six-month update window, with the exact pace set by niche. Price a B2B software program at the three-month end.

The full webinar below covers refresh cadence and the channels behind AI discovery.

Per the 2026 State of AI Search, pages untouched over three months were over 3× more likely to lose AI search citations. The comparison group was recently refreshed pages, and the finding is a correlation.

WebFX's survey of 350 digital marketers found 27% spend $501 to $1,000 per month on updates and refreshes. WebFX doesn't state when it ran the survey, so read the figure as a rough benchmark.

Refresh money puts sunk content marketing costs back to work. Josh Grant, founder of StackedGTM.AI, calls weak AI search results "a conversion problem on pages you already paid for." He made the case in an AirOps sprint webinar for buyers funding content without AI search results. Fix the pages you own before you fund more new ones.

Price the refresh line in five steps.

  1. List the pages that drive pipeline or earn citations today.
  2. Agree on refresh hours per page with your agency.
  3. Calculate the line as [pages due per quarter] × [hours per refresh] × [hourly rate] ÷ 3.
  4. Write those hours into the retainer as a fixed monthly line.
  5. Check citations before each refresh and again after a set review window.

A refresh updates facts and structure on a page that still answers the right question. A page that misses the question needs a rewrite, priced as new content. AirOps' stale content report covers page decay in more depth.

What is the average budget for content marketing?

No reliable dollar average exists for content marketing budgets, so use percentages and spread data instead. Size your content budget against revenue and peer ranges.

The Gartner 2026 CMO Spend Survey of 401 chief marketing officers (CMOs) and other leaders ran January through March 2026. In Gartner's data, marketing budgets sit at 7.8% of company revenue, and 15.3% goes to AI. The vast majority of respondents work at companies with over $1 billion in revenue, so read it as enterprise data.

Siege Media's 2026 content marketing trends survey polled 353 marketers in November and December 2025. In Siege Media's results, 25% budget under $5,000 a month and 31% budget $15,000 to $45,000. The sample is self-selected from an agency's audience, so it isn't representative.

The Content Marketing Institute (CMI) 2026 B2B trends research surveyed 1,015 B2B marketers between June and August 2025. In CMI's data, only 19% listed agency or outsourcing among their top three areas for increased 2026 investment.

Finance still wants a return case. Ali McCarty of AirOps frames it as justifying "a bigger headcount resource dollar investment." She ties that ask to AI search driving revenue for the business. Build the payback case before you request more money.

Start with one formula: budget = [annual revenue] × [marketing share of revenue] × [content share of marketing]. Plug in your own shares, then check the result against the quotes above.

Budget lines beyond owned content

Set aside part of your spend for third-party sources that AI answers cite. A placement is a spot your brand earns or buys on a third-party site. AirOps calls this work "more of a scalpel than a sledgehammer."

In one case from the webinar recording, a creator with about 2,000 subscribers had a video watched about 150 times. That video was the top-cited video for one key commercial prompt. It is one case, and it shows reach and citation can split.

Name these lines so they stay separate from blog spend in content marketing budgets.

  • Placements on industry publications that AI answers cite.
  • Partnerships with small creators cited for your commercial prompts.
  • Upkeep of review profiles on third-party sites.
  • Citation and mention tracking across AI answers.

Should you pay for content marketing as a retainer or per project?

Our take: use a retainer for ongoing programs and pay per project for defined, one-off work. Retainers are the norm: in SparkToro's survey, 85% of agencies primarily work on retainers and 15% on one-off projects.

Your situationBetter fitWhy
You publish and refresh every monthRetainerRefresh hours need a standing line
You need one research study or launchProjectThe scope and fee stay fixed
You are testing a new agencyProject, then retainerA paid trial shows quality before you commit
You need an audit or strategy reviewProject or hourlyThe work ends when the deliverable ships

Write these terms into any retainer you sign. Our AI content strategy guide covers how to plan the work those terms fund.

  • A fixed asset count per month, with each asset type named.
  • Refresh hours per month, kept separate from new content.
  • A clear exit clause after the first term.
  • Monthly reporting on citations, mentions, and pipeline.

How to judge a content marketing pricing quote

Judge a content marketing pricing quote by its unit price and its refresh terms. Run these five checks before you sign.

  1. Restate the fee as a price per asset with [monthly fee] ÷ [assets].
  2. Compare that unit price with the WebFX and Siege Media ranges above.
  3. Confirm refresh hours sit inside the base fee.
  4. Ask how SME interviews and original insight enter each brief.
  5. Require reporting on citations, mentions, and pipeline next to rankings.

Count these as red flags in any quote.

  • No asset count in the scope.
  • Refreshes billed at new-content rates.
  • Reporting limited to traffic and rankings.
  • A long lock-in with no performance review.

A quote passes when you can show its return to leadership. Lashay Lewis, founder of BOFU.ai, says the way to show leadership results is to "tie it to money." Her bottom-of-funnel webinar recap covers that approach. Set a payback target for each quote in pipeline or revenue terms, and score the agency with our B2B agency evaluation criteria.

Send three requests to every agency on your shortlist before the next pricing call.

  • Ask for the fee restated as a price per asset.
  • Ask for refresh hours as a written line item.
  • Ask for a payback target in pipeline dollars.
