Quality backlinks: what makes a high-quality link and how to get one

Summary:
  • A quality backlink is an editorial link from a relevant page people read.
  • Domain authority comes from third-party tools, so treat it as one input.
  • For AI search, check whether AI answers cite the linking page.
  • Earn links by pitching pages AI answers already cite, and skip link schemes.

A quality backlink is an editorial link from a relevant page that real people read. It follows Google's link rules. For AI search, the linking page also shows up in AI answers. That second test changes which links deserve your time.

This guide takes an offsite angle. Offsite means content about your brand on sites you don't own. A placement is a published link or mention on a third-party site. You want quality links and mentions on the pages AI answers draw on, because AI answers pull mentions and citations from them.

A citation is an AI answer linking to or footnoting a page as a source. A mention is an AI answer naming a brand, with or without a link. Platforms like AirOps track which pages ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity cite for the prompts you track.

That makes the AI test checkable for any page that links to you. Below, you'll learn what makes a quality backlink and how to get quality backlinks worth the effort.

What makes a quality backlink?

A quality backlink is an editorial link on a relevant page with real readers and clean link practices. Score any link against the seven criteria below.

CriterionWhat a strong link showsWhat a weak link shows
Topical relevanceThe page covers your topic or a close neighborThe site covers unrelated topics
Editorial placementAn editor chose the link and placed it in body copyThe link sits in a footer, sidebar, or template
Real trafficThe page earns steady organic visits from your audienceThe page shows no search traffic
Natural anchor textThe anchor uses your brand name or a descriptive phraseThe same exact-match keyword repeats across sites
Crawlable and qualifiedA standard link, with paid links marked rel="sponsored"Paid links pass as editorial links
Clean neighborhoodThe page links out to a few credible sourcesThe page links out to dozens of spammy sites
AI citationAI answers cite the page for your promptsThe page never shows up in AI answers

Practitioners put relevance first, too. uSERP's September 2026 survey polled 116 search engine optimization (SEO) professionals. Each picked the one factor that matters most. The answers are self-reported, and uSERP sells link building.

In that survey, 58.6% chose the topical relevance of the linking page. Another 13.8% picked the page's real organic traffic. And 12.1% picked whether AI engines cite the domain.

Only 11.2% picked DR or DA. Moz's Domain Authority (DA) and Ahrefs' Domain Rating (DR) are third-party scores of a site's link profile. Google says no third-party tool has access to its ranking systems, so neither is a Google metric. For you, this means the criteria senior SEOs value most are ones you can check page by page.

Check backlink relevance on the linking page and in the paragraph around your link. A link from a strong site still falls short when the page around it covers another subject.

Anchor text matters as well. Research from Cyrus Shepard, founder of Zyppy, found branded anchor text among the most consistent correlations with higher traffic. He reports it as a correlation and doesn't claim branded anchors cause the gains.

Google's link best practices confirm that Google "uses links as a signal" for page relevance. The same guide says "Good anchor text is descriptive, reasonably concise, and relevant." Brand-name anchors meet that bar without keyword stuffing.

Example of a good backlink

An example of a good backlink is your brand name, linked in a relevant guide that AI answers cite. The weak version looks similar in a link report but fails most of the checks.

SignalGood backlinkWeak backlink
Linking page[Topic] comparison guide on [industry publication]"Write for us" page on [unrelated site]
PlacementBody copy, next to a sentence about [your category]Footer, sidebar, or author bio
Anchor text[Your brand name] or [descriptive phrase][Exact-match keyword] repeated across sites
ReadersSteady organic visits from [your audience]No visible search traffic
Outbound linksA few links to [credible sources]Dozens of links to [unrelated or spammy sites]

Run this comparison on your top referring pages. Good backlinks pass most rows, and weak ones fail most of them. Weak rows are where to cut budget first.

Why domain authority is not the test for quality backlinks

Domain authority is a third-party estimate, so it can't tell you whether a link helps in Google or AI answers. Google's AI optimization guide states: "No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems." The same guide warns that chasing inauthentic mentions across the web helps less than it looks.

Practitioners split on DA. In the same uSERP survey, 62.9% said DR is not a primary factor in return on investment (ROI). That is an opinion about ROI, so read it as sentiment.

BuzzStream's 2026 survey of more than 150 digital public relations (PR) professionals shows the other side. Respondents named site relevance (87.2%) and DA/DR (85.8%) as link-quality criteria at nearly equal rates. BuzzStream sells outreach software, and the two shares add up to more than 100%, so respondents named several criteria.

So DA stays in the toolkit for many link builders. Use it as a first filter, then judge the page on the checklist above.

Smaller sites deserve a closer look in AI search. AirOps research on 548,000 pages found that mid-authority sites can win when their pages answer the prompt clearly and directly. A focused page on a smaller site can matter more to your prompts than a big-name domain.

Placements and owned pages do different jobs. Treat off-site placements as a way to earn brand mentions in AI answers. Treat your own pages as the sources you want AI answers to cite. So judge a placement by the mentions it earns for your prompts.

Your owned pages and third-party presence work together. This guide on authority for AI search covers the full plan. Use it to decide where placements fit next to your own content.

Aja Frost, then at HubSpot, now Director of Growth Marketing at Mercury, presented research showing backlinks matter less than consensus signals in AI answers. Backlinks still count for Google rankings, so keep two scorecards, one for Google rankings and one for AI answers.

How do you analyze backlink quality?

You analyze backlink quality by scoring each linking page on relevance, traffic, placement, and AI citations. A backlink quality analysis works best as six ordered steps.

StepActionWhat to look for
1. Pull referring pagesExport the pages that link to you from your link toolPage URLs, with domains as a secondary view
2. Check relevanceRead the page and the paragraph around your link to judge backlink relevanceThe same topic as your product category
3. Check trafficLook up the page's organic visitsSteady visits from your audience
4. Check placement and anchorFind where the link sits and what it saysBody copy with a brand or descriptive anchor
5. Scan for red flagsReview outbound links and content qualitySpammy outbound links and thin content
6. Check AI citationsRun your prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini, and PerplexityThe page shows up in recent answers

Red flags deserve their own pass. Editorial.Link's March 2026 survey of 518 SEOs named spammy outbound links as the top red flag, at 89.0%. Low-quality content came next at 86.3%, and Editorial.Link sells link building.

The AI check closes the loop on your backlink quality analysis. Crystal Carter, Head of AI Search & SEO Communications at Wix, advises auditing your backlinks to see which partners AI answers regularly cite. A partner that never shows up there deserves less of your budget.

In the clip below, Carter explains how large language model (LLM) mentions and citations differ.

Start that check with one category question. Ask Perplexity a category question, write down every source it cites, and treat that list as your target set. Compare that list with your referring pages to see where they overlap.

Run the check on recent answers, and repeat it on a regular schedule. Ask any link provider whether AI models cite the pages they place you on. Request the prompts and answers that show it.

Which backlinks should be avoided?

Avoid links built mainly to manipulate rankings, which Google calls link spam. Google's spam policies define it: "Link spam is the practice of creating links to or from a site primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings."

Link typeHow Google describes itWhat to do instead
Bought or sold links"Buying or selling links for ranking purposes"Mark paid placements as sponsored
Link swapsExcessive link exchangesLink to partners only when it helps readers
Automated linksLinks created with automated programsEarn each link through outreach
Keyword-anchor guest posts"links with optimized anchor text in articles, guest posts, or press releases distributed on other sites"Use brand or descriptive anchors
Footer and template links"Widely distributed links in the footers or templates of various sites"Seek links in body copy
Directory links"Low-quality directory or bookmark site links"List only in directories your buyers use

Paid links are allowed when you label them. Google's spam policies say qualified paid links don't violate them. Its guide to qualifying outbound links says to mark paid placements with rel="sponsored".

Use rel="ugc" for comments and forums, and rel="nofollow" when neither value fits. Google's examples flag guest posts only when they carry optimized anchor text across other sites.

The cost of spam lasts. Google's page on spam updates says ranking benefits from spammy links "cannot be regained" after a link spam update. Google runs SpamBrain, its AI-based spam-prevention system, to catch spam.

Swaps are moving to mentions as well. Tie any mention swap to a real partnership, like an integration page, since Google's AI guide warns against inauthentic mentions.

How do you get high quality backlinks?

You get high quality backlinks by pitching relevant pages that AI answers already cite. Here is how to get quality backlinks in five steps.

  1. Map the pages AI answers cite for your category prompts.
  2. Pitch relevant listicles and comparisons with accurate data or a clear product fit.
  3. Run targeted digital PR with fewer, more relevant pitches to writers on your topic.
  4. Reclaim unlinked mentions by asking authors who name your brand to add a link.
  5. Cover smaller, topic-specific sites as well as big domains.

The fifth step matters more than it looks. As the research above shows, focused pages on smaller sites can earn citations for your prompts.

Mentions still count, even without a link. Ask for the link when an author names you, and value the mention either way.

Keep outreach lists small and targeted. Smaller lists leave room for real research on each page, and they fit the relevance test above.

Price comes up next. The same BuzzStream survey found $300–500 was the most common known cost per link, at 19.6%. Another 39.2% didn't know their cost per link.

Those figures are self-reported by digital PR professionals and don't set market prices. Judge any price by whether AI answers cite the page. Over time, off-site mentions compound as more cited pages name your brand.

What to do next with quality backlinks

Start with the links you have, then build from AI answers. These three actions turn the checklist into a routine.

  1. Score your current referring pages against the seven criteria above.
  2. Build a target list from the sources AI answers cite for your prompts.
  3. Drop placements and providers that fail the relevance or AI citation test.

Measure results over months against a baseline. Track brand mentions for your prompts, since those show whether placements work.

AirOps for quality backlinks in AI search

The AI-citation test needs data on which pages answers cite. AirOps Insights tracks which pages AI answers cite and which brands they mention for your prompts. AirOps Offsite is a managed service that earns placements on pages those answers already cite. The AirOps team brings the strategy, intelligence, measurement, and execution, then ties the work back to pipeline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does domain authority decide whether a backlink is high quality?

No, domain authority doesn't decide link quality. DA is a third-party estimate, so good backlinks earn their place on relevance, traffic, and AI citations.

Can bad backlinks hurt your site?

Yes, spammy links can cost you the rankings they once supported. After a link spam update, Google says that benefit cannot be regained.

Is it worth paying for backlinks?

Paying for ranking credit breaks Google's rules, while paid links marked rel="sponsored" are allowed. Judge any paid placement by whether AI answers cite the page.

How many quality backlinks do you need?

No fixed number applies. Judge progress by how many pages cited for your prompts mention your brand, measured over months against a baseline.

How do I check if a linking page is cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?

Run your category prompts in ChatGPT and Perplexity and note every source each answer cites. Repeat the check on a regular schedule to keep your list current.
