What is off-page SEO? Strategies and how it differs from on-page

Summary:
  • Off-page SEO is work on other sites to earn the links, mentions, reviews, and listings that signal trust.
  • Your own pages earn AI citations, while third-party coverage decides whether AI answers name your brand at all.
  • Google says PageRank still sits in its core ranking systems. Its spam policies ban bought links that pass credit.
  • Start with category prompts, target sources AI cites now, and favor relevance over authority scores. Track mentions apart from citations.

Off-page search engine optimization (SEO) is everything you do outside your own website to build trust in your brand. It covers the backlinks, mentions, reviews, and listings that Google and AI answers read as evidence about you.

This guide takes the offsite view of off-page SEO. Offsite means any page you don't own, such as a news article or a Reddit thread. Those pages shape whether AI answers name your brand. AirOps, an AI search partner, tracks where your brand is mentioned and cited across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.

Below, you'll get a plain definition, a comparison with on-page SEO, and the techniques that work. You'll also get a seven-step process and a way to measure results.

What is off-page SEO?

Off-page SEO is the set of actions outside your website that earn other sites' trust in your brand. You'll also hear it called offsite SEO or offsite optimization.

On-page work changes what your site says about you. Off-page work changes what the rest of the web says about you. Search engines weigh both.

Links remain a core input for Google. Its guide to ranking systems says PageRank, its link-analysis system, is still part of its core ranking systems. Google adds that PageRank has evolved a lot.

Off-page signals take several forms. Each one tells Google and AI engines something different about your brand.

SignalExampleWhat it tells Google and AI engines
BacklinksA trade publication links to your researchOther sites vouch for this page
Unlinked mentionsA podcast recap names your product without a linkPeople connect your brand to this topic
ReviewsCustomers rate you on G2 or GoogleReal buyers trust you
Local citationsDirectories list your name, address, and phoneYour business details are real and consistent
Community discussionA Reddit thread recommends your toolPeers recommend you without being asked
VideoA creator compares your product on YouTubeYour brand is part of the category conversation

Three terms come up throughout this guide.

  • A citation is when an AI answer links or footnotes a page as its source.
  • A mention is when an AI answer names your brand, with or without a link.
  • A placement is when a third-party page features your brand, such as an article, review, or list entry.

What is the difference between on-page and off-page SEO?

On-page SEO covers what you control on your own site, while off-page SEO covers what others publish about you. Technical SEO sits under both and keeps your pages crawlable.

Main signalRelevance and clarityTrust and reputationAccess and crawlability

The last row holds the key split. Clear, well-structured pages on your site earn citations of those pages. Coverage on other sites decides whether the answer names your brand at all.

Your URL can lead the sources for a popular question and still leave your brand out of the answer. Ethan Smith, CEO of Graphite, says "You need other people to mention you."

Citations follow a different logic. Clear, direct pages give answer engines a passage worth citing.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of earning visibility inside AI answers. For the full split between the two disciplines, read our guide to AEO vs. SEO.

Why off-page SEO matters for Google and AI answers

Off-page SEO matters because Google and AI engines both judge you partly by what others say. On Google, links feed PageRank, and reputation supports trust.

Google's guidance on helpful content names experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) as qualities it looks for. What independent sites say about you is outside proof of those qualities.

Local results work the same way. Google Business Profile Help says local prominence is based partly on how many sites link to your business. It also counts how many reviews you have.

AI engines lean on third parties when they name brands. AirOps analyzed 21,311 brand mentions across ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. For top-of-funnel commercial queries, brands were 6.5x more likely to be mentioned through third-party sources than their own domains.

That finding shows association, not proof that coverage causes mentions. It does show where AI engines go for evidence about your category.

Brand signals carry weight in AI search too. Cyrus Shepard, founder of Zyppy SEO, advises investing in authentic third-party mentions so AI systems see consistent validation across the web.

That effect builds over time as coverage spreads. We break it down in our piece on offsite mentions and compounding citations.

Off-page SEO techniques and strategies that work

The best off-page SEO techniques earn coverage on sites your buyers and AI engines already trust. A strong off-site SEO strategy mixes several channels, because each one trades brand risk against budget differently.

Link building

Link building works best when you earn links from sites relevant to your topic. Moz Domain Authority (DA) and Ahrefs Domain Rating (DR) are third-party scores, not Google metrics. Relevance beats a high score. Put a niche site your buyers read ahead of a general site with a bigger number.

Stay inside Google's rules. Its spam policies list buying or selling links, link exchanges, and automated links as link spam. Paid placements are fine when the publisher tags them with rel="sponsored", as Google's guide to qualifying outbound links explains.

Digital PR

Public relations (PR) outreach earns coverage by pitching journalists stories they want to run, such as original data. In BuzzStream's February 2026 survey of 150+ PR practitioners, 85.8% named backlinks the most effective use of their work.

In the same survey, 66.2% listed getting mentioned in AI citations as a use of PR. That entry is new to the list. Both figures reflect practitioner opinion and self-report.

Vince Nero, Director of Content Marketing at BuzzStream, says "The thing that most highly correlates with showing up in AI overviews is unlinked mentions." That describes an association, not proof that mentions cause AI visibility. Track unlinked mentions from digital PR and watch whether they rise with your AI visibility.

Brand mentions without links

Large language models (LLMs) build answers from text they've read, so a plain mention of your name counts. Eli Schwartz, author of Product-Led SEO, puts it simply: "You don't necessarily need a backlink with an href anymore. you need a mention."

In this recording, Eli Schwartz walks through how AI search moves from visibility to pipeline.

Track unlinked mentions next to links. That way this work shows up in your reports.

Local citations and reviews

A local citation is any listing of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP). Keep those details identical across directories.

BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 of 1,002 US adults found 97% read reviews for local businesses. In the same survey, 47% said they won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews.

Google Business Profile Help says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. It also says you can't pay for a better one. Google's spam policies list sending a product in exchange for a write-up with a link. Keep reviewer outreach clean.

Community and forums

Reddit threads, LinkedIn posts, and niche forums show AI engines what peers think. Peer recommendations there carry weight that brand copy lacks.

Join as a named company account and answer questions honestly. Name competitors when they fit the question. Google's guide to generative AI features warns against chasing inauthentic mentions.

Guest posting and expert content

Guest posting works when you write for a site your buyers read and add expertise its editors lack. Google's spam policies flag paid or widely distributed guest posts that carry keyword-rich anchor links, so keep anchors natural.

Expert quotes in journalist roundups work the same way. Podcast appearances do too, and they put your founder's name in transcripts and show notes. Each byline and quote adds outside proof of your E-E-A-T.

Video and social

Video gives AI engines another place to find you. Kevin Indig, author of Growth Memo, ties YouTube mentions closely to brands being named in AI answers. Aim for features in creators' videos, not only your own channel.

Use this table to match channels to your budget and risk tolerance.

How do you do off-page SEO step by step?

Pick the questions you want to win, find the sources AI cites for them, and earn placements there. These seven steps turn that into a repeatable off-site SEO strategy.

  1. Pick category prompts by funnel stage. Choose non-branded questions buyers ask while researching, comparing, and choosing a vendor.
  2. Audit where you stand. List your links and mentions, then record which sources AI answers cite for each prompt today.
  3. Rank targets by relevance and recency. Favor sites AI cited recently in your topic over sites with a high DA or DR alone.
  4. Build assets worth citing. Publish original data, expert commentary, or tools that editors want to reference.
  5. Pitch and earn placements. Offer each site something specific, and ask publishers to tag any paid link with rel="sponsored".
  6. Collect reviews and fix local citations. Ask happy customers for reviews, and make your NAP details match everywhere.
  7. Measure and repeat. Wait until enough placements are live, then compare mention and citation rates against your baseline.

Category prompts drive the plan. Branded prompts already include your name, so they inflate results and hide real gaps.

Recency matters as much as reach. Parse's citation study re-ran 16,000+ ChatGPT prompts about 22 times each in March and April 2026. Two answers to the same prompt shared about 21% of cited domains. Parse ties most of that churn to run-to-run variation. Track citations over time, and start with sources cited lately.

No single domain decides your visibility. A long tail of smaller, topic-specific sites adds up across many answers.

Vet any link provider before you pay. Ask whether its placements show up as sources in AI answers today. You can see one approach to these steps in how AirOps approaches offsite work.

Expect a lag after each placement. Engines need time to find and reuse new coverage, so judge the program once enough placements are live. In the same BuzzStream survey, 85.2% of practitioners said they see results within 6 months.

How to measure off-page SEO results

Measure off-page SEO with four numbers, and keep each one separate.

  • Referring domains are the unique sites that link to you.
  • Mention rate is the share of tracked AI answers that name your brand.
  • Citation rate is the share of tracked AI answers that cite your pages.
  • Share of voice is your brand's share of every brand mention across your tracked prompts.

Mentions and citations move apart, so report them apart. Chris Long, co-founder of Nectiv, recommends separating citations from brand recommendations when you report on AI search. A citation credits your page, while a mention puts your name on the buyer's shortlist.

Crystal Carter, Head of AI Search & SEO Communications at Wix, maps classic SEO metrics to AI-era measures, likening brand mentions to share of voice.

Google Analytics labels a visit Direct when it has no clear referral source. Its AI Assistant channel catches visits tagged with the ai-assistant medium or whose referrer matches a known AI assistant. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links. Untagged visits without a referrer can still land in Direct.

Vendor samples show referrers go missing. Clickport found 35.7% of 2,619 recognized AI sessions had no referrer in 2026. That figure is a vendor snapshot from its own customers' sites. Clickport still identified those sessions by their UTM tags.

Add a "Where did you hear about us?" field to your forms. Buyers can then name ChatGPT or Perplexity themselves.

Google's page on AI features and your website adds one more wrinkle. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode sit inside the Search Console "Web" total, with no separate line.

Is off-page SEO still effective?

Yes, off-page SEO is still effective, and the tactics that work have shifted toward relevant coverage. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no additional requirements and need no special optimizations.

The same Google guide to generative AI features calls optimizing for generative AI search "still SEO." Standard SEO, including the off-page side, carries over to Google's AI surfaces.

Google's docs don't cover ChatGPT or Perplexity. The same AirOps study found brand mentions vary widely across AI systems for identical queries. Plan coverage for each engine you care about.

Your goal has changed more than the channel. Aim for relevant coverage that names you, and treat raw link counts as one input among several.

Standing still carries a cost. Competitors keep earning coverage, and AI answers reflect what the web says about your category today.

Common off-page SEO mistakes

These mistakes waste budget or put your brand at risk.

  • Buying links that pass ranking credit. In the same BuzzStream survey, about 80% of practitioners said they never buy links.
  • Paying for list placements without vetting them.
  • Chasing DA or DR scores instead of topic relevance.
  • Tracking only branded prompts, which already name you and inflate your results.
  • Judging results before enough placements are live.
  • Ignoring reviews and local citations, which feed local prominence on Google.
  • Hiring providers whose placements never appear as sources in AI answers.

What to do next

Start this week with a short audit. Choose your category prompts, run them in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, and list every cited source.

Rank those sources by relevance and recency. Then pitch the top targets with data or expertise they lack.

Set up review requests and a "Where did you hear about us?" field in parallel. Measure mentions and citations separately each month, and refine your off-site SEO strategy as placements go live.

AirOps for off-page SEO and AI visibility

This guide rests on one split. Your own pages earn citations, and third-party coverage decides whether AI answers name your brand.

AirOps External Content brings the strategy, intelligence, measurement, and execution to earn placements in third-party sources AI engines cite. It then measures the citation lift. See how our off-page SEO services work. Your next step is the category-prompt audit above, so you know which sources to target first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about off-page SEO

What is an example of off-page SEO?

A trade publication that quotes your CEO and links to your research is off-page SEO. A G2 review or a Reddit thread recommending you counts too.

Is off-page SEO more important than on-page SEO?

You need both. On-page work earns citations of your pages, and off-page work decides whether AI answers name your brand.

Do backlinks still matter for off-page SEO?

Yes. Google says PageRank is still part of its core ranking systems, so relevant, earned links still count.

Does social media help off-page SEO?

Social media puts your name where AI engines look, such as YouTube, LinkedIn, and Reddit. Treat it as a mention channel more than a link source.

How long does off-page SEO take?

Expect a lag between a placement going live and AI engines reusing it. In BuzzStream's 2026 survey, most PR practitioners report results within 6 months.

What is offsite optimization?

Offsite optimization is another name for off-page SEO, also called offsite SEO. It covers every action on third-party sites that builds trust in your brand.
